Project Management and Partners
The current project management arrangement for WasteDataFlow (WDF) is set out below. This consists of the Project Management Board, the Operational Group and the User Group.
Project Management
The project is managed by Defra, in consultation with the devolved administrations.
Responsibility for data collection, quality assurance and liaison with local authorities is devolved, as is publication of statistics and datasets.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - overall responsibility for
co-ordinating WDF in the UK. Responsible for implementation of the Waste Strategy
for England, reporting on national waste recycling, reuse and composting targets.

Scottish Environmental Protection Agency – monitoring authority in Scotland.

Welsh Government – responsible for implementation of the Waste Strategy
for Wales, and reporting on national waste recycling, reuse and composting targets.

Natural Resources Wales - monitoring authority in Wales.

Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) - responsible for the
implementation of waste management policy in Northern Ireland.
WDF Operation Group
There is a WasteDataFlow Operational Group who is responsible
for monitoring performance and operation of WasteDataFlow and for identifying
and making proposals for enhancements. This includes representatives from:

WDF User Group – England
A WasteDataFlow User Group for local authorities in England meets approximately annually.
The overall aim of these meetings is to make WasteDataFlow a successful data capture system with a high level of timely good quality data returns.
A local authority can request to attend a User Group meeting by responding to information emails that are sent out or by contacting the WDF helpdesk.

Origins of WasteDataFlow
WasteDataFlow went live in 2004 and was originally developed under the guidance of the Chartered Institution
of Wastes Management Environmental Body - CIWM (EB), with funding from Biffaward and the
Defra Landfill Tax Credit Scheme SWM Legacy Fund. Responsibility for co-ordinating the
system in the UK sits with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
(Defra).
